Chlorine Is The Breakfast Of Champions

Another winning speech from Rita Mascia.

This was Rita's 7th speech from the Toastmasters "Competent Communicator" programme.

The purpose of speech 7 is to give the speaker skills with researching a topic. Specific objectives include collecting information about the topic from numerous sources and then carefully supporting each point with the specific facts, examples and illustrations gathered.

Here is a synopsis of Rita's winning speech:

Rita's speech dealt with a very common phobia - fear of drowning - which particularly affects people who can't swim.

In her speech entitled "Chlorine is the breakfast of champions" Rita gave an account of her own close encounter with drowning that sparked a determination to overcome her fear of drowning by learning to swim.

After a brief overview of the physical, mental and social benefits of swimming, Rita revealed some unsettling statistics about swimming and told a story of a family deeply affected by their inability to swim which lead to 6 teenagers drowning in a river.

At the end of her speech, Rita exhorted the audience to embrace swimming as a healthy activity but also as a potential life saver for others or oneself.
