What a high standard of speaking at the Area Contest last Sunday!
All the contestants came from the four clubs in our area: Hertfordshire Speakers, Ware Speakers, Cornerstones and West Herts Speakers.
First, there was Table Topics. The question - “What could you invent to make people's life better?"
West Herts Speakers’ two contestants were inspired. Alastair went first. His invention: a mind reading machine. The reason? To be more efficient at helping people.
Richard’s invention was, quite simply, company. Based on the personal story of his taxi driver uncle, Richard explained how keeping company with people makes their life better.
And the results? Our own Richard Beagle came SECOND in the Table Topic contest. What a fantastic performance for a such a “young” Toastmaster! Richard joined West Herts Speakers last April and has delivered only two prepared speeches.
Then came the Humorous Speeches.
Stuart Lawson, with his fascination for obituaries and ardent conviction to outlive his bank account, developed his witty speech with great energy and inventiveness.
Colin Donald, also a well-seasoned Toastmaster, ironically and sparklingly explained in front of a fascinated audience how, from the age of twelve, he assiduously worked at building a perfect body to be able keep his tummy in and attend orgies ...
In the end, Hertfordshire Speakers won the Table Topics, and Cornerstone won the Humorous Speech contest. Well done to Peter Ford (Hertfordshire Speakers) and Gayna Cooper (Cornerstone) and best of luck in the next round.
Better watch your backs, though, you other Hertfordshire clubs. West Herts Speakers is coming for you ...
It was a Contest to remember. Don’t miss the next round - 8-10 November in Colchester.
