"Excellent!"
"Superb!"
"First-rate!"
"Formidable!"
These were just some of the words that exploded spontaneously from West Herts Speakers when our General Evaluator for the evening, Anthony B, wondered what synonyms there might be for "good".
And they all referred to the meeting!
We left the starting post at a gallop, with Table Topics Master Anthony B posing a number of questions about the animal kingdom. We met acrobatic hamsters, dogs with a nose for news and a general antipathy to cats before being treated to Paul's winning Table Topic speech about what fish talk about in school (don't shoot the messenger …)
After the initial acceleration, Amanda delivered her icebreaker speech, telling us of her love for singing, then and now. Clearly happy in her stride, Amanda took the coveted ribbon for best speaker.
Rivka and Jacqui then presented a double act, straight to camera, on what Stuart, one of their evaluators, seemed convinced was the subject of "childless pain". Rivka and Jacqui treated the subject of home birthing with sensitivity and dignity without ever ducking the central issue.
Everything ran to time and, though we might not have set any records, we crossed the finishing line breathless and happy.
Next time is competition time!
Be in your seats by seven o'clock on Wednesday 12 March 2014.
Be there at the beginning of West Herts Speakers bid to take over the (speaking) world!
