This is Colin winning the West Herts Speakers' award for BEST TABLE TOPIC.
For those who aren't aware, a table topic is a mini-speech from 1 to 2 minutes long. Easy you may say, but...you're not told the topic or question that you have to speak about beforehand!
Aaaarrrrrrgggghh...some of you may cry!!!! It sounds like the scariest thing ever.
At Toastmasters our heart does pound and sometimes even our mind goes blank when we step on the stage but, it's such a warm, friendly and suportive environment in which to practice these invalauable skills.
When would you use these skills you may ask?
I particularly find these skills useful when networking - the art of stepping into a room full of people that I don't know or barely know to make a connection with them...instead of my previous babbling on and on hoping they would talk so that I could shut up!
Being put on the spot is another occassion where you would draw on your table topic skills. Maybe this would be at work, in the lift (Elevator Pitch) or even at a bus stop. At these times, it's useful at to be able to think and talk concisely and proficiently...engage brain before you speak :-)
Learning table topics skills will give you the knowledge and experience in how to respond, even when your mouth dries up and your brain falls asleep.
